The Geoeconomics of Natural Gas in Europe Survey

  • December 9, 2022

Sustainable access to affordable energy is essential for modern national economies’ functioning, growth, and modernization. The competition over energy sources is primarily attributed to the uneven energy supplies among national economies. Around 85 percent of global energy consumption comes from fossil fuels, constituting a significant component of national economies’ energy mix. However, several factors will put pressure on fossil fuel’s role in the future:

  • Climate change mitigation policies
  • Energy security strategies
  • Issues related to the socioeconomic attribute of energy policy

The environmental & economic characteristics of natural gas make it one of the most widely utilized fossil rendering it the fuel of choice both from an environmental and economic point of view. Both fossil fuel and natural gas producers offer opportunities for sustained growth because of their role in raising income and reducing poverty.

This survey wants to understand how fossil fuel, and natural gas, are used as geoeconomic tools to achieve strategic objectives in Europe. Which countries are considered targets of such geoeconomics tools? The survey also wants to understand the countermeasures the affected countries are taking to ensure the continuity of their energy supplies. There is also a need to investigate the impact of such geoeconomic contests on the Eurasian landmass and other fossil fuel and natural gas producers in different regions, specifically the Arabian Gulf. In particular, the survey aims at:

  • Determining how Europe can achieve energy security, sustainability, and sovereignty.
  • Identifying the root causes of the gas crisis in Europe.
  • Determining how fossil fuel and energy are used as a geoeconomic tool to achieve Europe’s strategic objectives.
  • To determine the countries that are the target of such geoeconomic tools, how they have become vulnerable, and what they are doing to mitigate such risks.
  • To determine which regions/countries see such development as an opportunity and what they are doing to secure that.
  • To clarify the energy, economic, and geopolitical implications for the Arabian Gulf, considering its role as a global natural gas producer.
  • To shed light on the global geopolitical implication with a specific focus on the role and behavior of international producers and consumers.
